The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Walter K. Barnes, Acting Hospital Steward, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action on June 3, 1900, at Province of Bulacan, Philippine Islands, during an engagement with insurgents for going forward to the firing line and applying first-aid dressing to a soldier who had been wounded fatally.
General Orders: D.S.C. issued in lieu of the certificate of merit and the D.S.M. under the provisions of the act of Congress approved March 5, 1931.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to William F. Lewis, Captain (Medical Corps), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Laksamana Usap's Cotta, island of Jolo, Philippine Islands, January 7, 1905. During the attack on the cotta, Captain Lewis showed great gallantry and courage when he went into the line of fire to the assistance of a badly wounded soldier, whom he rescued and carried to the dressing station, where the man later died.
